A downward arrow carries a fundamentally different navigational instruction: the smoking area is not ahead or around the corner, it is right here, directly below this sign. This makes it the ideal marker for smoking areas located at ground level beneath a mounted sign, at the base of a staircase, in a sunken courtyard, or in any below-grade or step-down outdoor space that sits lower than the main property level. Where the upward arrow sends visitors on their way, the downward arrow stops them and says: you have arrived, look down, this is the place.
