HOW MANY ADA PARKING SIGNS DOES MY LOT NEED?

Under the 2010 ADA Standards, a lot with 1–25 spaces needs 1 accessible space, 26–50 needs 2, 51–75 needs 3, and 76–100 needs 4. At least one of every six accessible spaces must be van accessible. Medical facilities follow different ratios: outpatient facilities require 10% of patient and visitor parking to be accessible, and rehabilitation facilities require 20%.

WHAT DOES CALIFORNIA REQUIRE THAT FEDERAL ADA DOES NOT?

California adds requirements beyond the federal minimum. Accessible parking signs in California must display the minimum fine for unauthorized use, and many lots also post a tow-away warning. These state-specific signs are covered in the wizard above.

WHAT ARE THE TOW-AWAY SIGN REQUIREMENTS IN CALIFORNIA?

California Vehicle Code 22658(a)(1) sets the state minimum: a sign at least 17″ × 22″ with lettering at least 1″ high, posted in plain view at every entrance to the property. It must prohibit public parking, state that vehicles will be removed at the owner’s expense, and carry both the local traffic law enforcement phone number and the name and phone number of every towing company you hold a written general towing authorization agreement with.

Inside the City of Los Angeles, LAMC 80.71.4(c) requires more: the sign must be at least 24″ × 24″ and must show an LAPD telephone number. Properties improved with a single-family dwelling are exempt from that sign requirement.

That means a sign that satisfies state law can still be too small to tow with in Los Angeles. Requirements vary by jurisdiction — verify the current statute text for your city or consult a licensed attorney.

HOW HIGH MUST AN ADA PARKING SIGN BE MOUNTED?

Federal standards require the bottom edge of the sign to sit at least 60 inches above the ground, measured from the finished grade rather than the curb, so the sign stays visible when a vehicle is parked in the space.
